On November 21, Wolfgang Sprie of Woodstock boated and released this nice 35 inch, 24 pound striped bass at Carters’ Lake. Unlike other stripers he’s caught, this one had a story. He and guide Louie Bartenfield noticed an algae-covered plastic tag trailing off its belly and contacted WRD-Calhoun fisheries biologists. The unique tag number revealed that the striper was only 19 inches long and weighed 3 pounds when tagged by WRD staff back on 3/17/2009! Over that 6+ year period, the fish grew an average of 2.5 inches in length and gained 3.2 lbs. per year. Based on its length when originally tagged in 2009, it’s estimated the striper was stocked as a 1-inch fingerling in spring 2007, making it 8 years old. While the Carters’ Lake tagging study is long over, we appreciate the anglers reporting the tag and revealing this unique “fish tale.” .
And now here is the rest of the story:
